THE WATER WHISPER

By now it’s no longer a whisper really. That is, that Aurora (The Government) cannot actually guarantee Gunns an adequate water supply for their proposed pulp mill. But no worries, if it works out that way, and Gunns are forced to abandon their plans to build the mill for this reason, the real whisper is that they reckon that they have a good case, even a very good case, for compensation.

If Gunns have been so seriously mislead, on such a fundamental thing as this, you’d have think that they’d see it that way. If you were on a roll, wouldn’t you?

If you cannot trust the government who can you trust?

When Did This Whisper Start?

The whisper is that this one started, and was put out there, recently when the Gunns' directors started to feel that 'their project' was not only under threat but also starting to lose momentum. The word is that putting out the message that there is good money going for tradesmen sends the message that the company's confidence is high and that they are very determined.

A fringe benefit is also seen to be that it will help keep the local subcontractors in line and on side. Work that one out!

Now, a lot of local businesses do not like the message. And for very obvious reasons but Gunns seem to be oblivious to all of that. It also seems that they have some insiders who sympathise!

BUDGET WORRIES!!

In a mens room somewhere in Launceston with technicolour cows on the lawn outside

"They reckon Rudd's guna can the whole MIS thingo"

"BULLSHIT!"

"No I do not think so... I just heard it from a very good source .... an old mate!"

"BULLSHIT"

"Its one of the razor gang's suggestions .... the word is they reckon it will not hurt anyone important"

"Who have YOU told?"

"Just you until now'

"Why haven't you told him?"

"I'd like to keep my job for at least a few more weeks"

"JESUS! ... what will we do if that really happens? ... more to the point, what will THEY do?"

A shadowy figure enters the room.

Another Mumble

If you have a motel or hotel there is a good chance that you’ve received an enquiry about how many rooms you can supply for $400 a night.

The story goes that the directors are getting a bit disturbed about others thinking that they have an interest in what goes on in the Tamar Valley or indeed Tasmania. Anything that gets in Gunns way needs to be swept away and tourism looks like its getting in the way.

Money will do it every time!

But Gunns to the rescue, “we’ll fill the places up and it’ll be cheaper than building a workers camp” … a winning idea all round. What do you suppose?
